Bas Pinckaers holds a Law degree (“mr.”) (1987) and an MA (“drs.”) from the University of Amsterdam (1988), and an LL.M degree from the University of California (Berkeley, 1989). He has worked as a scientific researcher at the Max-Planck-Institute for Intellectual Property in Munich, Germany (1990), and as an assistant professor at the Institute for Information Law at the University of Amsterdam (till 1992).

Since December 1992, Bas has been practicing as an advocate at NautaDutilh and since December 1997 at Van Doorne. He headed Van Doorne’s technology team. As per September 2025, Bas continues his practice as partner at Van Rappard Minneboo Klingenberg.

In 1996, he has published his Ph.D entitled “From Privacy Towards a New Intellectual Right in Persona” (promoted by H. Cohen Jehoram of the University of Amsterdam and J. Thomas McCarthy of the University of San Francisco).

Area of practice:

• Patent law, trade secrets law, trademark law, design right law, copyright, plant variety law, unfair competition law
• He advises on European patent and Dutch patent law and UPC law, trade secret law, licensing strategies
• Bas advises and litigates on behalf of iconic companies that own famous and well-known trademarks
• He litigates IP rights in Dutch courts and patent rights at the Courts of The Hague

Scientific work in IP field:

• Co-editor and co-author of “IEC, Intellectuele Eigendom, artikelsgewijs commentaar” a four-volume loose-leaf treatise on IP law, which is now being digitalized. Bas is editor of the part on patent law.
• Editor and regular author of the main IP magazine in the Netherlands, “IER, Intellectuele Eigendom en Reclamerecht” (Scientific bi-monthly magazine on IP and Advertising law). Each year, Bas (co-)authors an overview of all case law and literature on Dutch and European patent law.
• Honorary teacher on an irregular basis at the Centre for Intellectual Property Law (CIER) of Utrecht University, University of Amsterdam and University of Groningen, where he has co-lectured a LL.M course on patent law.
• Founding father of and speaker at the annual Unitary Patent Package Conference on Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court organized by Euroforum.
